Quiet often, I feel like the negativity spotlight is unfairly on Africa. It sometimes feels like we did something wrong by just being African. We always complain about colonisation as if it's something that couldn't be solved in a decade. But, for a moment, let's take the spotlight off of Mother Africa & see how other indigenous peoples around the world faired after being colonised.
ASIA:
Asia faired the best after being colonised by European entities, they came out of colonization so well that many far-east Asian countries managed to reach European-level development. Europe & Asia have always shared historic ties so their development should come as no surprise but south Asia has faired the worst with some regions still experiencing ethnic wars, ethnic persecutions & poverty.
AUSTRALASIA:
Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia, Melanasia, Papua New Guinea were all home to melanated people because they lived closer to the equator. The islands faired better because I suppose islands have stronger sense of identity than people of larger masses of land because the islands prevent easy arrival of foreigners & easy departure of nationals. Most of Australasia seems to have maintained some of their ancient way of life & modernised but still seem to live under relative squalor by global standards. Australian aboriginals still exist & seem to have still managed to keep their ancient traditions alive also, as well as the Maoi of New Zealand but it's fair to say that they have lost control of their land's governance to the British settlers who, initially, mistreated the natives.
THE AMERICAS:
I guess it's safe to say that the "Indians" or Amerindians of North & South America were near "wiped off the face of the Earth." The Inca, Mayan etc. civilizations all succumbed to Europe. The natives of America suffered under diseases, forced removals & being forced to work under foreign (European) systems. The positives are that indigenous North Americans can hold on to is that in USA, various indigenous nations still have reserved land &, at least, Canada (Kannada) still has it's indigenous name.
We often just look at Africa (both Arab & Trans-Saharan Africa) when we think of colonisation but when all sides are observed - despite being enslaved, various methods of brutal physical torture, forced to disregard our way of life & infected with diseases - Africa has been resilient. Many of our languages are still alive, we could still cite various African kings & chiefs, we can still perform many of our ancient rituals. Africa, probably, faired better than native Americans & Aborigines during colonisation; this can be attributed to the fact that Africa is not the easiest place to survive, let alone colonise. The places in Africa that did fall under colonial rule, eventually, returned (in some form) to native rule.
